How to start a clipping business
Clipping turns long-form video you have the rights to into short clips that you post on your own accounts, in campaigns that pay per 1,000 verified views. This guide covers the path, the disclosure rules that differ by platform, and which numbers can be confirmed.

What clipping is and is not
A clipper finds the moments most likely to hold attention in a long video, such as a podcast episode, a webinar or a live stream, and cuts them into vertical clips of roughly 15 to 60 seconds. The clips go on the clipper's own YouTube Shorts, TikTok or Instagram accounts. A campaign owner, usually the rights holder, pays per 1,000 views that pass review.
It is not reposting. Platforms reduce distribution for accounts that mostly republish other people's content without meaningful change. YouTube's monetization policy names reused content that is not significantly changed under inauthentic content. A real clipping business adds something: a structure, commentary, framing or context that makes the clip a different piece of work.[1]
It is also not a way to skip the rights question. A clip needs a licence from the owner of the source. A campaign that supplies licensed material answers this for you. Material you find yourself needs written permission first.

How long it takes
| What | Range | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| First clip drafted | Same day | Estimate. Moment detection and captions are automated; choosing a licensed source is the wait. |
| First withdrawable dollar | About 10 to 21 days | Estimate. Review windows, a hold after approval and withdrawal time add up; many clippers never reach a payable amount. |

Disclosure: it differs by platform
A paid clip is advertising, and the FTC expects a clear and conspicuous disclosure of a paid relationship. The mechanics are not the same on every platform, which is why one generic label is not enough.[2]
| Platform | What to switch on | What to put in the clip or caption |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube | The Paid promotion setting | A burned-in sticker reading Paid and #ad |
| TikTok | The commercial content toggle set to Branded content | #ad in the caption; nothing burned into the video |
The exact wording and placement are your responsibility as the poster. If a brand's brief differs, follow the brief and the platform's current help page.
What it costs and requires
| Item | Rule | Required |
|---|---|---|
| Software and accounts | No licence cost to start; accounts are your own | Yes |
| Age | 18 or older | Yes |
| Payout identity checks | Handled by the payout provider before the first withdrawal | Yes |
| Source rights | A licence from the rights holder, usually supplied by the campaign | Yes |
| Software fee | A share of confirmed earnings that flow through Cashcade, shown before you start. See fees | Yes |
How money is confirmed
Views on your own public videos can be read through the official APIs of YouTube and TikTok after you connect your account. Those platforms document what an authorised app may read, and a connection with read access cannot post for you.[4][5]
There is a limit worth knowing. Third-party campaign platforms do not expose a public interface for earnings, so a view count from the platform does not confirm a payout from the campaign. Cashcade counts a dollar as confirmed when a payout path it controls has settled.[6]
Headwinds and the next move
| Headwind | Detail | Next move |
|---|---|---|
| Crowded campaigns | Many clippers chase the same sources, so the same moments get cut repeatedly. | Choose rights holders who supply material and compete on structure and craft. |
| Reach limits on reposts | Platforms reduce distribution for accounts that republish without meaningful change. | Add a transformation to every clip and keep a consistent point of view. |
| Rights claims | Third-party music, guests or footage inside a source can still trigger claims. | Check the licence covers the whole source before you cut. |
| Rejection and caps | Views can be rejected after they accrue, and campaigns have per-clip caps and budgets that run out. | Read the cap and the remaining budget before cutting. |
| Posting automation | Unaudited apps are limited in how they can post through an official API. | Post the clip yourself, or schedule through an audited route. |
Three starting shapes
| Offer | Source | Deliverables |
|---|---|---|
| Podcast highlight set | A licensed episode | 8 clips with captions, titles and disclosure text |
| Live-stream moments | A creator who gave permission | 10 clips with thumbnails and a posting schedule |
| Webinar explainers | A brand's long-form webinar | 5 explainers, each with a hook and a call to action |
Questions
Do I need a large audience to start clipping?
No. Campaigns pay on verified views of the clips you post, so what matters is the clip and its distribution, not your follower count. Performance is not guaranteed.
Is clipping someone else's video allowed?
Yes, with a licence from the rights holder. Campaigns that supply source material include that licence; material you find yourself needs written permission.
How is a paid clip labelled?
On YouTube use the Paid promotion setting plus a burned-in Paid and #ad sticker. On TikTok use the Branded content toggle and put #ad in the caption without burning anything into the video.[3][6]
Does Cashcade promise earnings?
No. Cashcade shows confirmed amounts and never projects what you will earn.
